The atmosphere couldn’t have been sunnier Thursday at CARE’s 3rd Annual CARE for the Cape Day in spite of the cool and misty weather. Previous year’s events were held at Waqouit Bay Reserve and Cape Wildlife Center. The purpose of this annual event is two-fold: to benefit a local nonprofit or tourism attraction through hands on volunteer service that helps to repair or improve its infrastructure while offering the participants an opportunity to learn more about CARE for the Cape and Islands and how they might support its efforts.
More than forty volunteers from the business community came to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster to lend a hand with the new Pollinator Path, a 2016 CARE funded project, and prepared 500+ plants for the museum’s upcoming plant sale. The knowledgeable “Gardening for Life” volunteers for the museum led the morning activities.
Many of the volunteers were from Cape tourism businesses among others and were joined by six AmeriCorps Cape Cod workers and nonprofit organizations, many who were recipients of CARE’s 2016 grants. Attendees were treated to a celebratory “Cinco de Mayo” lunch while grants were presented to help fund nine local projects. Grants ranged from $500-$1,500 and included Yarmouth New Church “Connecting Yarmouth Trails”, Harwich Land Trust video development, Nauset Middle School’s “Charms for Change” 3D printing project, Coastal Community Capital/Cape Cod Chamber for development of a Cape-wide Maritime Themed Itinerary, Cape Cod CAN! Natural Wonders Mural, Cape Cool’s Earth Day Seeds and Songs, and Food Scrap Collection and Education Series Project which is a collaboration between the Falmouth Farmers’ Market and Compost With Me.
