Sarah Engelman, a rising senior at Dartmouth College, joins CARE’s team as a Communications Intern. She is originally from Philadelphia, but has spent every summer on Martha’s Vineyard with her family. Sarah has many fond memories of going to the 4th of July parade, Illumination Night, and the Agricultural Fair every year. “Martha’s Vineyard is the place where my family can gather and spend quality time together,” Sarah says. “It’s one of my favorite places in the world not only for all the great things the island has to offer, but also because I associate it with the people I love.”

While on Martha’s Vineyard, Sarah enjoys spending time walking around the towns, hiking on the trails all over the island, and relaxing on the beach. For several summers starting in high school, she worked as a sales associate at the Lilly Pulitzer store in Edgartown. Sarah, who has been figure skating for over ten years, also skates at the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena. Both of these experiences have connected her to the local community and allowed her to form personal connections on the island.

At Dartmouth, Sarah is a history major and government minor. She studied abroad in London during her junior fall and is currently using her free time to conduct research for a senior thesis. On campus, she is co-captain of the figure skating team and a tutor in the Institute for Writing and Rhetoric. According to Sarah, “My studies at Dartmouth have prepared me well for my work with CARE. I have a lot of practice conducting thorough research and writing clearly to communicate with others. Overall, Dartmouth has given me the tools to explore my interest in non-profit work.”

While with CARE, Sarah hopes to use her skills to give back to the Martha’s Vineyard community, as well as the greater Cape Cod region. Her time on the island has taught her about the importance of environmental protection and promoting sustainability. Additionally, Sarah’s love for history causes her to really appreciate CARE’s message of cultural and historical preservation. She is excited to see where her work will take her this summer.
